Thailand International Takes off - One the moring of May 1,1960,readers of the Bangkok World received with their newspapers a special supplement commemorating a milestone in Thai aviation: the formal inauguration of Thai Airways International and the departure of its first flight,a fully-loaded DC-6B,bound for Hongkong, Taipei,and Tokyo.
The inaugural ceremony at Don Muang was a memorable affair. Thailand's beautiful Queen Sirikit presided,and presented plaques to each of the airline's first three Douglas DC-6Bs planes,obtained from SAS on a lease-purchase basis.The names for the aircraft had been personally chosen by King Bhumibhol Adulyadaj from the roster of famous Thai heroines.["Suranaree", which made the first flight, was named after the wife of an early 19th-century governor of Korat,who successfully routed an invading Army from Laos.
